What Do You Need for a Traditional Greek Easter BBQ?

When is Greek Easter 2025?

In 2025, Greek Easter falls on Sunday, 20th April - and this year, it’s extra special.

That’s because, usually, Greek Orthodox Easter and Western Christian Easter don't fall on the same date, but this year they do. This doesn’t happen often, and when it does, it’s a perfect moment for everyone to come together in celebration.

Why Do the Dates Normally Differ?

Greek Easter, celebrated by the Greek Orthodox Church, is usually on a different date from Western (Catholic and Protestant) Easter. That’s because the Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar, while Western churches use the Gregorian calendar. Additionally, Orthodox Easter must fall after Jewish Passover, in line with historical tradition.

As a result, Greek Easter often falls one or more weeks later than Western Easter — but every so often, the calendars line up, and 2025 is one of those rare occasions!

How is Greek Easter Celebrated?

Greek Easter is the most important religious holiday in Cyprus and across the Greek Orthodox world. It's a time of deep spiritual reflection, joyful celebration, and, of course, amazing food.

Cyprus BBQ Foukou at the Greek Church Easter Celebrations

After weeks of fasting during Lent, Easter Sunday is a time to gather with family and friends and enjoy a true Cypriot feast. At the heart of the celebration is the foukou - the traditional Cypriot BBQ — sizzling with souvla, sheftalia, and other grilled delights.

Homes fill with the smell of lamb Souvla, freshly baked flaounes (cheese-filled pastries), and the clinking of red-dyed eggs in the traditional tsougrisma game.

Tips for Preparing the Perfect Easter Souvla

  • Choose the right cut: Pork shoulder or leg of lamb are classic choices.

  • Marinate overnight: A simple mix of olive oil, lemon juice, oregano, salt, and pepper gives a traditional Cypriot flavour.

  • Use lumpwood charcoal: For that authentic smokey aroma, always go for good-quality charcoal.

  • Cook low and slow: Keep the foukou turning and let the meat slowly roast until tender and golden brown on the outside.

  • Don’t forget the sides: Serve with pita, tzatziki, grilled halloumi, olives, and a fresh village salad.
